Another year and another underwhelming finish at the biggest tournament of the year for the all-star lineup of Secret. Thought to be the best team at last year’s event, Secret fell apart in Seattle taking home a 7/8th place finish; this year they go out on the first day of the main event. Facing up against TI invite LGD, Secret quickly fell behind in the early game but were able to stall the match out over an hour. After multiple attempts to break the enemy high ground, LGD were finally able to make their push and forced the Shanghai Major champions to tap out.
Other fan favorites, NàVi, were also eliminated today by one of the projected hopefuls to win the tournament coming into it, Liquid. NàVi weren’t going to go out easily, but Liquid’s team fight was just far superior and was able to come out on top engagement after engagement.
The SEA region had a good showing today as two teams from the lower bracket, TNC and Fnatic kept their championship dreams alive by defeating VGR and Escape respectively. Also coming out on top from the region was MVP Phoenix who beat top contender OG in a Bo3. The first two games were split between the two but MVP destroyed OG in game three sending the European giants to the lower bracket and sending MVP to face off against the other winner of today, Wings.
Wings won a close match against DC in game one but were demolished in game two with a couple questionable hero picks. Firing back in game three, Wings showed that they are a very unpredictable team that can win in multiple circumstances forcing DC to call gg shortly after the 25-minute mark.
